Summer of 2007. I just graduated from college, and I’m about to study for the board exams. I have until June to enroll for review classes. With no money (I exhausted the very last of my resources trying to graduate), I know I have to do something to raise the needed amount for my review. Andun si Liz, the highschool crush ng bayan, and with good reason. Artistahin, maputi at makinis, long shiny hair, average height, super sexy. “Tagal na kami wala nun…,” sagot ko, sabay buga ng usok sa langit.

I looked her in the eyes “Eh may nakita syang iba eh.” Nasulot si May sakin ng isa sa mga barkada namin ni Liz noon. Damn ugly guy with lots of cash, unlike me, a poor man’s son. It was the same guy who introduced me to Liz years before, and one of the many proofs that to some the size of one’s wallet is also a part of one’s sex appeal.

“Ah, ganun ba.”
“Di mo ba alam?”
“I heard the rumors, sorry.”

Iiling iling akong humanap ng mauupuan. Naisipan kong maupo dun sa isa sa mga cottage. Lit another cigarette then surveyed the place. Isang malaking pool, probably good for at least forty to fifty people, rooms sa gitna, tapos hotspring just on the other side. It was designed so that natatakpan ng rooms yung view ng pool on one side at hotspring sa kabila. Several cottages here and there, walls all around. The forest beyond. Mt. Makiling towering over us. By then it was 830 in the evening. Medyo mahamog na yung lugar, and nawala na din yung init ng araw. Hmm, masarap nga lumangoy ngayon, but I’m tired from the travel. I took off my clothes. “Patay,” I thought, my lungs burning and water filling my throat. I tried flailing furiously to get to the surface.

Everything became blurred. This must be the end. What a way to go.
